Itinerary
- Departure from Cusco: The tour begins with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We travel northwest of the city, passing through scenic Andean landscapes, open farmlands, and traditional villages. Along the route, the guide provides insights into Inca agriculture and the importance of salt production in the region.
- Moray Archaeological Site: Our first stop is Moray, a fascinating Inca archaeological complex known for its circular agricultural terraces. These terraces are believed to have functioned as an experimental agricultural center, where the Incas tested different crops under varying microclimates. Walking along the terraces, you will gain a deeper understanding of the Incas’ advanced agricultural knowledge and engineering skills.
- Journey to Maras: After Moray, we continue toward the town of Maras, enjoying panoramic views of the Urubamba mountain range and snow-capped peaks. The route offers excellent opportunities for photography and appreciation of the Andean landscape.
- Maras Salt Mines: We then visit the Maras Salt Mines, a spectacular network of more than 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside. These pools have been used since pre-Inca times and are still managed by local families using traditional methods. As you walk along the paths overlooking the salt pans, the guide will explain the salt extraction process and its cultural importance.
